Introduction - First Post
This blog is part of a journey. I am going to write about my dream of becoming a professor of English Literature and of the Humanities.
A year and a half ago I was battling a recurrence of breast cancer, and I had been laid off from my job as a computer programmer. My life was at an all time low, and I decided to change. I had always wanted to talk to people about literature, and how it can affect and guide our life.
In my work as a programmer I often incorporated elements of literature. I used to refer to my programs as poems. Creating information systems was an art. Making projects with managers and coworkers was like participating in class. So, why not do the real thing?
A year and a half ago, still undergoing chemotherapy, I returned to Diablo Valley College and started taking English classes, in Science Fiction, Shakespeare, and Mythology, where I reread the Greek and Latin classics I had been forced to study in Italy as a teenager, and that I finally understood! (Yes, it takes an American professor sometimes to make us appreciate our own heritage.)
Several of my classmates liked how I linked my life adventures with what we were studying in class, and urged me to write a blog.
This blog is dedicated to them...and to all my classmates...and to my future students once I attain my master's degree.
Feel free to leave comments for me... and happy reading!
